Please join us for the private view of recent work by Sam Birch. The inspiration for the new work is London, each piece being a portrait of the city. The work reveals a real shift in direction for the artist taking a fresh approach to his subject, combining traditional drawing and painting techniques with photography, computer generated imagery and satellite technology. We are invited to view the city through a maze of networks and pathways on a vibrant and colourful journey, from antique maps through to present day cartography, displaying a wealth of intricate detail that is both striking and compelling. This exhibition features more than 10 paintings, all varied in scale and mood and has been created over a two year period. “Command-Alt-Escape / Three-finger salute”, “Apocalyptic Non Aqueous Raining Cats and Frogs” and “God Help Us!” present us with a disturbing vision of the city. “God Help Us!” features Stanfords famous map of London 1864 with the artists own version of the coat of arms, bearing the words God help us in place of the original Latin motto of the city, “Domine dirige nos”, which translates as “Lord, direct (guide) us“.
It is a comprehensive series of work, which echoes the Artists passion and dedication to his subject.
London is a monster that consumes us, I often feel the need to escape it, but the City is like a magnet.
The purpose of my latest work is to explore the impact that the city has on our planet and my love hate relationship with it. To study my subject I have chosen to step back from it by reducing the scale, enabling me to view the entire metropolis as if it were under a microscope. London is like a living, breathing, organism that changes shape and evolves so rapidly, with an enigmatic quality that is as beautiful as it is ugly.”
